Jahrhunderts entwickelte sich in Deutschland eine nationale Bewegung, die in erster Linie die Einheit des Vaterlandes und die Befreiung des Volkes von der Fremdherrschaft zu ihren politischen Zielen erklärte. Im Zuge dieser Entwicklung entstand vor und während des Krieges 1813/1814 die „Lyrik der Befreiungskriege".
In den darauffolgenden Jahren entstanden auf der foundation dieser Lyriktradition im Umfeld einzelner Studentenbewegungen mehrere politische Schriften. Den Ausgangspunkt dieser Bewegungen bildete die in den Jahren 1815-1819 an der Gießener Ludivicana politisch aktive Gruppe der Gießener Schwarzen. Im Jahr 1817/1818 rekrutierte sich aus dem Kern dieser Verbindung der enge Kreis der sogenannten Unbedingten unter der Leitung der Brüder Karl und August Adolf Ludwig Follen. Aus diesem Kreis und dessen Aktivitäten ging eine Anzahl lyrischer Texte hervor, die bis heute in der literaturwissenschaftlichen Forschung nahezu unberücksichtigt geblieben sind. Die Hauptwerke der Lyrik der Unbedingten sind die 1819 in Jena herausgegebene Anthologie Freye Stimmen frischer Jugend und das sogenannte Große Lied.
Vor dem Hintergrund der Ideologie, der Ideen, Ansichten, Ziele und Aktivitäten dieser Gruppe ist die Untersuchung ihrer Lyrik hinsichtlich der Frage nach ihrer shape und vor allem ihrer Funktion bislang in keiner Weise befriedigend aufgearbeitet worden. Dieser Umstand wird zum Ausgangspunkt für die vorliegende Arbeit, deren Schwerpunkt bei der examine ausgewählter Lieder des Liederbuches Freye Stimmen frischer Jugend liegt.
Damit die shape und die Funktionen der Lieder umfassend herausgearbeitet werden können, erscheint eine induktive Vorgehensweise und die Formulierung einer allgemeinen Fragestellung notwendig.
