Die Geschichte der Gussmanns beginnt mit Wilhelm, einundzwanzig Jahre alt, gelernter Dreher. An einem kalten Morgen im Herbst 1927 verlässt er die Pflegeeltern und kommt in die fremde Stadt. Mehr als die Kälte treibt ihn die Erwartung: Er wird seine Mutter sehen.
In seiner Vorstellung ist sie jung, weißhäutig und von sanfter Natur. Hier muss die Geschichte stocken.
Sie verändert die Richtung, und eines Tages begegnet Wilhelm dem jungen Mädchen Elisabeth. Alles an ihr ist hell: die Haut, die Haare, selbst die Brauen. Diese hier, weiß Wilhelm, hat er gesucht. So könnte Elisabeth in die Geschichte der Gussmanns eintreten, aber sie zögert. Dieser dürftig gekleidete, magere Bursche, arbeitslos zumal, gleicht wenig dem Bild, das sie sich von dem Geliebten erträumt hat. Sein Drängen erschreckt sie, die Liebe dachte sie sich anders.
Doch die Geschichte, einmal begonnen, nimmt nun ihren Verlauf. Wolfgang Licht beschreibt in diesem Roman mit subtiler Genauigkeit das Werden und Wachsen einer Familie. Es ist eingeschlossen in die Geschichte des Dritten Reiches und vollzieht sich auf dem in jenen Jahren mitunter schmalen Grat zwischen intestine und Böse, Humanismus und Barbarei.
